About the Program
Client Monthly Visits
Every child enrolled in Washington County Public Schools and Head Start of Washington County who meets the Free or Reduced lunch program criteria is eligible for services from Children In Need, Inc. CIN’s primary mission is to keep children in school learning with a good sense of belonging. On behalf of their children, clients are eligible to visit the Center each month to receive the following items for each child:
- up to 5 tops & 2 bottoms
- 1 pair new underwear
- 1 pair new socks
- new toiletries
- new school supplies
- new hat & gloves (winter months)
- 1 gently used coat
- 1 pair of shoes (if available)
- 1 to 2 books or toys (if available)
School Supplies
Between July and August, before the school year begins, Children In Need, Inc. gives school supplies to 2000+ children who are eligible through the Free or Reduced Lunch Program. This program responds to the teachers’ requested items for each grade level, and gives each child seventy-five percent of his/her list. The supplies are packed in grade appropriate packages.
Back to School Vouchers
Each summer, right before school starts, CIN gives a voucher to school age children so they can participate in a controlled shopping day. These children are able to purchase a new outfit, shoes, book bag, etc. CIN is completing another mission by preparing economically challenged children for a successful school year.
Special Requests
Each week Children In Need, Inc. receives 1-3 special requests from school counselors, school pupil/family liaisons, DSS workers, and other local agencies for goods not usually donated to our Center.
Examples of requested goods are:
- Size 3X mans coat for a 14 year old- $24.88
- Shoes for a 16 year old boy (his shoes were stolen)- $24.98
- Black pants and white shirt to march in the school band- $29.88
- Alarm clocks
These special requests impact whether a child is able to stay involved in everyday school life. Always, the child and his/her family are economically challenged. CIN makes every effort to meet these requests with our limited funds. Our mission is to keep children in school and thriving.
